About our neighbourhood

Welcome to the Wincanton, Castle Cary, and Bruton Neighbourhood Team page. My name is Sue Place, and I’m your Connect Somerset Champion. I work with The Balsam Centre, a healthy living centre that provides community-based, purposeful, and life-changing activities.

The Wincanton, Castle Cary, and Bruton area has a mix of social and economic extremes, with many low-skill, low-wage jobs. Young people face challenges with limited social, education, and job opportunities, as well as housing and transport issues. Many older people have retired to the villages and are isolated, needing long-term health and social care. The area is developing its cultural and natural assets for tourism and has a strong sense of community.
